Stockton is a 'new' lake on the Sac River, first filled to normal operating pool level in December 1971. Considerably larger than the close by Lake Pomme De Terre, Stockton boasts 198 miles of shoreline and almost twenty-five thousand acres of water. Stockton is another one of the many Army Corps of Engineer lakes in Missouri. The Drive to Stockton Lake is very interesting because you never know what kind of view is going to greet you around the next curve or over the next hill. It may be an arm of one of the lakes or a typical prairie vista or the encroaching Ozarks Hills. Stockton is famous throughout Missouri (and much of the US) for its excellent sailing , thanks to the prevailing southwest winds sweeping across the lake. Stockton lake is considered one of the best places to sail in the entire Nation! There are several yacht clubs and sailing clubs that have active members who can often be seen out on the lake. For people looking to enter into sailing races Stockton is definitely a lake that you need to try. Races are help monthly during the summer and average 10 miles plus in distance. There is also excellent fishing all across the lake, with several guide services offered for the serious fishermen or if you would like to improve your skill. Fish species that are prominent on the lake are walleye, crappie, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, and channel catfish. One real advantage to Stockton is that the lake is far less crowded than many of the larger, more commercialized lakes in Missouri. This aspect of the lake is typically what visitors comment on the most, the privacy that you can enjoy while out on the water. It is not uncommon to be able to relax in a cove on the lake and have the cove to yourself all day. This is especially great for water skiing as in the evening and early morning visitors can almost always find smooth water to ski on, which if you have never had the experience of skiing on completely smooth water you definitely need to try because you will enjoy it. While the area around the lake is certainly anything but overcrowded, the area is still complete with all the modern convinces any vacation goes would expect. Most of the resorts on Stockton are what you would consider small to medium size resorts with around 5-10 cabins, and there are plenty of options for bargains. Overall if you are looking for a family trip that is different from the typical vacation to a larger lake, or if you are looking for a great place to relax and really enjoy nature then definitely give Stockton a visit, you will be very glad that you did.
