Lake Taneycomo was constructed way back in 1913 when the White River was dammed by the dam near Forsyth Missouri. For about 45 years Taneycomo was a 'normal' lake in that its waters were not cold how they are today. Then in 1958 Table Rock Lake was created above Lake Taneycomo and thus making the lake into what it is today, a 'cold water lake'. Once this change occurred the department of conservation decided to create the Shepherd of the Hills Trout Hatchery near the base of the Dam since trout thrive in the cold water environment provided by the cool waters of Table Rock. Visiting Taneycomo is a great experience not just because of the amazing fishing opportunitys the lake provides, but also because it offers a unique blend of nature and excitement due in large part to nearby Branson and all the excitement that venue provides. This dual combination is what make this lake such an appealing lake to take a family vacation to because it can provide entertainment is so many ways, and is sure to get everyone in the family fully satisfied with their trip. One of the really unique aspects of the lake is that when the above dam is on and generating power, Taneycomo ecentially turns into a fast running, very deep, and very cold river that provides fly-fishing opportunities that are second to none in the state of Missouri. Overall the lake offeres many recreational activites including hiking, sightseeing, hunting, fishing, swimming, boating, water skiing, and many different restaurants, shopping options, shows, and resorts to accommodate longer stays.

Lake Taneycomo draws its water from the depths of Table Rock Lake. The water that flows from Table Rock Lake to Lake Taneycomo is a very cold 48 degrees. This is one of Missouri's largest "coldwater" lakes. This means one thing to a specialized group of anglers; TROUT! The cool, clear waters of Lake Taneycomo create an ideal environment for trout, earning the lake a reputation as one of the world’s best for Rainbow and Brown Trout. Lake Taneycomo flows much like a river, and is stocked by the Missouri Department of Conservation's Shepherd of the Hills Trout Hatchery. The upper portion (close to the Table Rock Lake Dam) is known as a "trophy area" to Trout fishermen. Lake Taneycomo doesn't just offer great Trout fishing, it offers all the amenities of a large Missouri lake as well courtesy of the adjoining Table Rock Lake. Branson and all of its shows and attractions are very nearby! As you can see Lake Taneycomo would make an ideal vacation destination for the serious fishermen with a typical family who are looking for an exciting lake vacation.
